About Dr. Richard M Petty

Professor Richard Petty is Associate Dean and Professor in Management (Accounting & Finance) at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Sydney, Australia. Richard is also Chairman of an investment company headquartered in Hong Kong.

Professor Petty is Deputy President, CPA Australia and serves on the organisation’s Board of Directors. Richard serves on several other Boards including Flintwood International Ltd, the Ireland Funds (Greater China) Ltd, and AISHK Ltd.

Richard commenced his career as an analyst in the late 1980’s. Since then he has advised a number of multinational firms and governments on financial and strategic issues. After spending some time at Ernst & Young (Sydney), Richard started - and later sold - several companies.

Professor Petty is an internationally recognised authority on corporate governance, specifically in the area of the impact that the voluntary disclosure of information to stakeholders has on entity value. Richard’s work on developing predictive algorithms that can be used in estimating the stock price impact of various types of disclosure events is used by multinational companies, research centres and governments around the world for investment and policy setting purposes.

Professor Petty has been a faculty member at the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, the University of Hong Kong and the Australian Graduate School of Management. Richard is on the editorial board of The International Journal of Accounting Literature, and The Journal of Intellectual Capital. His academic work has appeared in The Australian Accounting Review, The Journal of Management Accounting Research, The Journal of Intellectual Capital, and The Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal.

Richard is a university medalist. He graduated with first class honors in Accounting and Finance (B. Bus, UWS). He holds a Masters degree (with honors) in Commerce from The University of New South Wales, and a Ph.D from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Richard is Fellow of CPA Australia, and also holds the CMA and MFP professional designations.
